Letters of George Snow, Co. H

George Snow, age 26, a farmer, six feet three inches tall, light complexion, light eyes, brown hair; enlisted at Cherry Valley, New York to serve three years. Mustered in as a private, Co. H, 76th New York Volunteer Infantry, October 18, 1861; promoted corporal, no date; wounded in action, August 28, 1862, at Gainesville, Va.; discharged for disability, caused by wounds, January 26, 1863, at Washington, D.C.

He was wounded by a gun shot wound to the right thigh the ball remained in the leg causing a stiff leg. He was treaded at Columbia College Hospital, Washington, D.C.


Washington 19th 1862

friend John 

Robert Story has got back and told me that he has Seen you and you and him took a big drink together he told me that you had Sent me a box of Stuf from home i Was glad to here it but We are A going to move tomorrow and i dont now as i can in Joy it as must as i Could here i will get it to day and it will Come good to eat on the road 

we have had a big time here for the last week we got our pay and all had a drunk i for one was down to the Sity fore days and three nites you bet i tore things got drunk and Sober and drunk a gain but got back Safe a gain 

i Sent forty dolars to Chery Valley by express to Charls McClane for you i Want you to go and get it and pay William hall What i ow him and John Danals what i ow him and the rest keep for me give mother as fore dalars too by her a new dres and the rest keep till call for by mother 

we have marching orders and we espect to go tomorow We may not go till Wensday i dont now where we will go for Shure they to Forteres monrow but i dont think it be futher then virginy but i dont now mor close whare i is as long as i keep new 

i am corpral of the gard to day and hant much time to rite now So must Close
